The brown rat, also known as the Norway rat or sewer rat, is the most abundant rat found throughout the UK. First recorded in our country in the 18th century, rats have thrived off of human activity to survive and flourish. Anywhere there are people, you're sure to see the brown rat, whether that be within an urban environment, rural or within our sewer systems. These rodents present as a reddish-grey to brown colour and live within strong hierarchal and social colonies, naturally underground within a burrow system. However, as they live successfully alongside us, they can usually be found within our gardens, homes and businesses alike. Want to request a treatment? Click the book now button below.

The common house mouse, just like rats, have a close association to us and can be found throughout buildings within the UK. House mice are able to live permanently within a home or business, with little need to venture outside. Reported in the UK since the 10th century, these small rodents appear as a mix of grey to black, with a pointed snout and a tail nearly as long as its entire body. House mice are sporadic feeders and choose to eat from multiple food sources. Their droppings are half the size of a grain of rice and they will produce up to 80 of them per day, at various locations. Keep this in mind if you suspect a potential intruder in your home and consider booking an appointment today.

The black rat, also known as the ship rat, was once the most dominant species of rat in the UK. The black rat is now a rare sighting and is usually only found around UK shipping ports and canals. Unlike the brown rat, this species does not dwell inside of the sewer systems and tends not to burrow. In fact, they prefer to dwell above or off of the ground. The black rat tends to be smaller in size, has larger ears and eyes, and has a tail length typically longer than the body and head. The black rat doesn't always have black fur, with most presenting with a brown or a reddish-grey coat.

Just like rats and mice, squirrels are classed as rodents. The grey squirrel can often be spotted within parks, gardens and woodlands within most parts of the UK, excluding the north of Scotland. Unlike the native reds, grey squirrels are classed as an invasive species and can be distinguished by their larger size and lack of ear tufts. This common rodent may enter loft spaces in an attempt to build nests (dreys), usually out of the loft insulation and have been known to cause damage to property/electrics.

Also known as the wood mouse, this little rodent is another mouse species in the UK , which commonly enters homes uninvited. Alongside this, the field mouse can often be found within sheds, garages and outhouses. Compared to the house mouse, the field mouse can be distinguished due to it's 'mousy brown' top coat and distinctive white underbelly. It appears with larger ears, eyes and a slightly longer tail than the size of it's body. The barn owl is one example of a natural predator for the field mouse and due to this, it is imperative that a thorough survey is carried out, along with non-toxic treatment methods, such as trapping. If you live near to a park or rural land, consider this species as a contending pest intruder.

A common species of ant which usually affect human dwellings in the UK, is the common black ant (Lasius niger), or garden ant. This social species prefers to build their nests in soil and building foundations. With this preferred method, coupled with the fact that they also like to forage on sweet food sources, can often mean they become a nuisance as they access buildings through the smallest of cracks to forage. Whilst they pose no significant impact, they may walk over unsanitary ground or objects which could provide a cross contamination risk within the home.

Fleas are classed as external parasites (ectoparasites), living on hosts and consuming their blood as a food source . In the UK, there are up to 60 different species of flea. The most commonly treated flea within UK households and businesses is the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis). This species of flea not only feeds on cats, but can also feed on pet dogs and humans too! These biting insects like to hide out in cracks and crevices around the home, along with bedding areas and soft pet toys, to name a few. Beetles make up over 40% of all insect species worldwide. From textiles, to stored food, to agricultural, these pests can be found throughout UK households and commercial premises. One common species if the Varied carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbacsci), which is classified as a textile pest. Adults of this species tend not to be the primary concern, as they feed upon nectar and pollen outside. Instead, it is the larvae which feed on a high animal protein source, which may come from a birds nest in your roof space, carpets around a dwelling and even clothing products, all of which contain keratin.

Bedbugs are classed as a nocturnal parasite, which survive through feeding on a host's blood. Although they primarily feed on humans, they are capable of feeding on other mammalian species, like pets and rodents. This parasite tends to hide within cracks and crevices of furniture and then ventures out at night for a meal. Bedbugs are typically found within hotels and hostels, but can make their way to domestic dwellings, via second hand furniture and suitcases. Though their bites can be irritable, they present no associated risk to human health (with the exception of some reported allergic reactions) . Bedbugs can survive for lengthy periods of time without a blood source (up to 1 year!), and can travel between rooms within a dwelling, so consider this if you suspect you have an infestation.

Cockroaches are found worldwide, predominantly inhabiting natural dwellings such as forests and fields, although some species prefer dwelling in urban areas. The German (Blatta germanica), Oriental (Blatta orientalis) and American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) are a few species which are commonly dealt with as a pest, here in the UK. Cockroaches, in general, prefer warmer environments and can be linked to the spread of disease. They are typically found in areas such as kitchens, bakeries, restaurants and hotels, where there is an array of food sources and water is plentiful. If you spot this pest running around your home or business, get in touch today for a quote and treatment.

Wasps can present as a significant nuisance in the spring and summer months, for homes and businesses alike. Typical wasp species found in the UK, include the common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) and the German wasp (Vespula germanica). Wasps are able to nest in close proximity to humans and can quickly cause concern and disturbance, building nests in soil banks, garden sheds and loft spaces. Approaching the end of the summer months , a wasp is no longer required to rear larvae inside of the nest. As a result, they leave the nest in search of a sweet food source, such as ripened fruit or even a pint of cider in a local beer garden. The higher the quantity of sweetened food consumed, the more 'drunk' and aggressive they can become, often resulting in an unwanted sting. To limit the number of these unwanted interactions, it is important that when a nest is discovered, to contact a pest controller to safely and effectively treat.

There are over 100,000 species of fly worldwide, with select species
feeding on the blood of host animals and some feeding from other food sources such as faecal matter or pollen. A cluster fly (Pollenia rudis), is a common species which can be found (typically during the autumn months) hibernating within loft spaces. Cluster flies
begin their life cycle as an egg, before developing into larvae and feeding on earthworms. After pupating in soil, adults emerge, feeding on wild flowers and nectar. As temperatures drop, these flies form large clusters in human dwellings, hence the term 'cluster fly'. Another typical fly species is the common house fly (Musca domestica). This species of fly are attracted to food sources such as faecal matter and as such, can pose significant risks to human health when coming into contact with food preparation surfaces and foodstuffs.

Bees are closely related to both wasps and ants and play a key role in the pollination of plants. There are multiple species of bees found in the UK, both solitary and social. The honey bee (Apis mellifera) is a common and valuable insect which can be spotted across the country in the warmer months. Honey bees can build complex colonies and are used in the production of honey, with bee keepers owning hive colonies for this purpose and for benefitting the pollination of crops and meadows. Unless a colony is approached directly or disturbed, bee's do not typically pose a threat to the public. As they provide such a significant benefit, bees should only be treated by a pest controller as a last resort and if they present a serious health risk. Instead, it is always advised that a local bee keeper is contacted to remove a swarm or colony, wherever possible.

Similar to butterflies, moths come in a variety of different shapes, sizes and colours. Some species are beneficial to the local ecosystem and assist in pollination. However, there are some species in the UK which can cause issues in dwellings, due to textile damage and destruction of stored food products. A typical pest species includes the common clothes moth (Tineola bisselliella). As larvae, these moths consume products containing keratin such as carpets and clothing and so,
can cause costly damage to items throughout the home. The common clothes moth larva spins a silk case, which is used as a home and for rest during the day. During the evening, the larva leaves the silk case, to find a food source. The majority of adults do not feed, as their mouth biology has not developed and only survive for a short time period after emerging to mate. Instead, it is the larva which causes the damage.

The Asian hornet is smaller than our native hornet and is a fairly new pest species found within mainland UK. First spotted in the Channel Islands in 2016, there have since been numerous reports extending as far North as Cork, Republic of Ireland. There are growing concerns in regards to this species, due to the impact on local wildlife. In particular, concerns surrounding the honey bee population, as Asian hornets will actively predate whole colonies. To differentiate this species from the likes of a wasp, these insects present with a larger, darker body, with a distinctive fully yellow/orange face. Their leg tips are yellow and they have a yellow band around the 4th segment of their abdomen. If you see or suspect Asian hornet activity near you, call us today for immediate control.

Following a rodent infestation, loft spaces may become contaminated due to excrements. Rodents can carry numerous diseases, which can be transferred to humans and pets within the home (zoonotic diseases). Due to these concerns, removal of materials and disinfection of the area, may be required. If you feel this is your current predicament, drop us a message for a quote!

Moles (Talpa europaea) are a common species found across the country, inhabiting areas with optimal soil conditions for tunnelling (deep and well-drained). Moles can be found inhabiting fields, farmland, golf courses and even residential gardens. They can be identified due to their black/grey velvety coats, long pink snouts and large front paws, adapted for digging. They consume earthworms as their primary food source .
The most apparent indication of mole activity is often large heaps of soil (molehills), as a result of tunnelling. This inflicts damage to agricultural land and to the gardens of homeowners. The primary concern is the associated safety risks of tunnelling, to both humans and livestock. The uneven ground can present as a trip hazard and increase the likelihood of falls.
